So, I was on the internet, and I found a creationist saying that evolution is just a theory but what I found in the comments as rebuttals to the statement were just as much a misunderstanding of the history of science and the philosophy of science. People were claiming that gravity is just as much a theory, and basically saying "you're stupid for not believing in the theory of gravity because you can see it for yourself when you jump off a cliff." I have some bad news for these people trying to promote science - YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!
Gravity is a phenomena we can observe, yes, and how it affects things composed of energy (such as matter and light etc.) may be described by Newton's inverse square law, but an even better approximation for the phenomena is described by the theory of relativity. The theory of relativity is a little more dense than a simple mathematical relationship, but from what I understand a more sophisticated version of Newton's inverse square law can be extrapolated from it that makes much better predictions where Newton's law fails. Trust me, I listen to a lot of Neil deGrasse Tyson.
